    dell dimension 2300

    im trying to help a guy out i work with. hes a little slow and alot of people at work give him a hard time. needless to say i feel bad for him and try to help him out any way i can. so we were talking the other day and he said his computer has all sorts of virus' and is basically usless at the moment. so i got it home and im trying to throw a fresh copy of win 7 on it for him. Question number one. can this machine even run win7? it has xp home so im assuming it shouldnt be a problem. question 2, afrer i insert the iso disk and reboot and get to the boot menu i have the following options

    NORMAL
    DISKETTE DRIVE
    IDE CD-ROM DEVICE
    SYSTEM SETUP
    IDE DRIVE DIAGNOSTICS
    BOOT TO UTILITY PARTITION

    i select ide cd-rom device and it boots straight to xp. i tried it a couple times and it goes the same direction. Any help would be awesome. thanks fellas and lady fellas

    - I wouldn't assume that a machine with XP home can run Windows 7. Do you know the actual specs of this machine?

    - Never laid hands on a Dimension 2300, but if it's roughly contemporary to the 2400, it's an ancient piece of Celeron garbage that doesn't run much of anything well.

    - It's possible -- even likely -- that the optical drive is bad or the disc is damaged. Can you boot to any kind of CD on it?

    Yes they are

    @Kickinthedoor
    There's your problem. DVD's don't work in a CD drive.

    Use the above tool to make a bootable USB stick from the Win7 DVD.

    Doubtful if that PC will support booting from USB.

    From the OP it doesn't appear as if it does.
