Where should I install libreoffice to?

    Hi,

I've downloaded LibreOffice to install on an older release of Ubuntu that had OpenOffice. I've removed OO.

What directory should I extract LibreOffice to?
    does it really matter?

    Thanks

    Veronica

Which release of Ubuntu? If you are still using 10.10 as it says in your profile, it reached "end of life" a while ago: http://fridge.ubuntu.com/2012/04/10/...april-10-2012/

To install it without support, what I would do is make a working directory in my /home folder to extract and see what's inside.

Yes I know it's no longer supported and intend to upgrade soon. However, I'm away from home right now and not in a position to do a fresh install.

You downloaded the .deb? Don't extract it, open it with (I think) gdebi. (Right-click on the downloaded file.)

If you've downloaded the correct version for your OS (the rpm version is shown as default), you should have a tar file. You can uncompress that anywhere in your home folder. Then read the README that appears after uncompressing for exactly how to proceed.

Note that your title is a bit confusing ... Did you mean where to uncompress LibreOffice installation files?

Regarding the actual installation, the README explains how it is done. The "average" user won't even know (or need to know) where LibreOffice has been installed.

The best way to install AOO IMHO is to use indeed the .debs downloaded directly from the official web sites.
