    - using Mint Cinnamon, but then I am using a desktop GPU. It could be your driver; do you have the latest one from Additional Drivers? Have you configured it via the Catalyst panel? Perhaps you could take a look in the mame.ini file and check that openGL is enabled? It should be in /etc/mame/mame.ini.
    I enable it directly when I call mame, so that shouldn't be a problem. I checked, and as far as I can tell I have the latest ATi driver. Perhaps something went wrong when I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04? I could try a clean install of 12.10 when it comes out.

    Not sure what optimizations you've tried but have you at least enabled opengl and multithreading in mame.ini?

    (Under PERFORMANCE OPTIONS: multithreading 1 and under VIDEO OPTIONS: video opengl)

    Mame from the software manager works fine on a 64bit 12.04 with Nvidia.
    donkey kong, burger time are my favourites as I've played them in the 80'

    I guess you need to install the proprietary ATI drivers. I doubt the opensource will be very good.

    Multithreading wasn't enabled yet; that was a factor 3 improvement to 2000 FPS. Only 1.5-2 left to go. Perhaps the reason can be found in why my glxgears runs relatively slow on my computer.

    The optimizations I tried were more in a few code changes to get opengl working on my system, and some recompiles with different options.

    Well, a few updates later, and some tweaking of the mame.ini file, and I'm at 9000%, more than twice what I got under Windows. I'm happy for now. Thanx for the assistance all.
