Bucky, did youwant me to enter that string of code after going into Network Manager, amd Edit Connection? Should I be in automatic, or automatic DHCP addresses only?

ps: I'm still waiting for the rebooting with the windows cd to stop so I can reinstall ubuntu.

Your IP4 Settings should be set to Automatic (DHCP) and your IP6 settings set to Automatic.

    Daslinkard
Do I just type this in like this "lspci"? Nothing else?
ps: the computer says we have 20 more minutes for the cd to load. We are working with a really crappy computer. And I'm on the phone relaying all the kind responses to my partner to type in. So we are almost done with the windows installing (hopefully to install something that had been missing to fix this now). Then we'll put ubuntu back on. So it may be some time, but we'll let you know.

What do you think should happen after running that code? What does it tell?

You will open the Terminal by either

    holding
    CTRL+ALT+T
Or by clicking the Super Key (Windows Key), opening up the Dash home and typing in terminal.

once the terminal opens up, then you will enter
    Code:
    lspci

The output that comes from the command you run needs to be pasted into the forum so we can see the network driver for your NIC. Potentially it could be some kind of driver conflict preventing you from being able to access the Internet.

Thanks daslinkard and buckey for your patience.
We're reinstalling ubuntu right now and then will provide you the output of the code entered

Okay, after putting that code in this is what came up (note, it came up very quickly and I tried to write down all of it as fast I could before it went off the screen abruptly)

Squashhsf_read_data failed to read block ox75d346c….

Re: wired says connected but can't connect to the internet

You should not have to "install" Ubuntu. You should only have to boot from the Live CD to bring it up. From there you should be able to determine if you can connect to the internet.

What does your desktop system network line connect to? A network router? A network switch? A cable modem?
    Thanks,
    Ken
