How Do I Invert Colours On My Desktop?

I'm using a desktop, and can't change the brightness. Looking at a bright screen is hard for my eyes. Is there a way to invert the colours?

if you are using 12.04 or earlier & compiz you could try enabling the "Negative" plugin in compiz

That may or may not prove suitable, what theme & or any adjustment will obviously affect what 'negative' produces.

If so then you'd need to change the bindings as the current defaults of super+n & super+m conflict with unity bindings, screen shows plugin settings with negative applied with a slightly modded Ambiance theme
