hp pavillon dv7 serious bug with desktop wall

    Hi,
I am using an HP pavillon dv7 with Ubuntu 10.04. I did not use a later version because after installation I simply got a black screen because, as I understood, my graphic card was not handled by the latest versions. I could not find a solution with the time I had, so I decided to use 10.4.

Then, one day I don't know why, I wanted to see if ubuntu would be slower if I used a 6x6 desktop wall. After changing the settings, compositing stopped working (if I understood), docky was all black and the window frames disappeared (impossible to close the windows with the mouse) and my internet connection stopped working (both ethernet and wifi). Also, the same day I had upgraded to version 2.6.32-41, and it could be related.

So I started using only 2.6.32-40 and it was fine, I had my 6x2 desktop wall and everything was working. Some times I checked the most recent versions and in all of them I had the previous problem. No window frames, no internet. So I always start with version 40. Again I did not have time to find a solution. Today ubuntu told me that a restart was required. And now all the versions I can select have this problem. v 40 and after and before. I get the desktop wall with 6x6 desktops and no connection. Ubuntu just becomes unusable.

This is really important for me and I wonder if you know this problem and if you know a solution.
Also please note that I am not a specialist.

    Thanks !

Re: hp pavillon dv7 serious bug with desktop wall

Well actuall I think that what I am talking about is the workspace switcher. I have 36 workspaces and it is impossible to reduce the number.
I have uninstalled compizconfig-settings-manager. And now when I right click on the mini desktop on the taskbar I can see the number of workspaces and change it. Which I couldn't do before. But the window is blinking on and off, and when I change the number of workspaces and press ok the change is not taken into account. If I rightclick on the thing, I get 36 workspaces again.
Is there any other way to change the number of workspaces manually ? Is there a file with some settings to change ?
