    Windows Update

I just wanted to write this because last night I spent almost 4 hours installing and updating winddows 7... And I just wanted to say thank go for linux because Installing and updating linux is not even half as excruciating. Once you go Linux you never go back!

4 hours sounds quite good. I reinstalled Vista on a laptop a few weeks ago...never again...it took an incredibly long time. Updates followed by updates, by service packs, then more updates, driver installations, adding all the standard softare...a grueling process.

On a similar note, I recently bought a new computer and installed both Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 on it. Windows 7 could not detect my wireless card or my graphics card, so it couldn't connect to the Internet or display things on my screen very nicely. Ubuntu detected both cards with no problem and worked very smoothly. Kind of a funny reversal of the way things have sometimes been in the past.

Watch out - I've had win service pack - rewrite the boot code and you have to re-install grub.

Might scare the daylights out of the noobs!

I agree though. Win updates are a total pain. Fortunately I don't actually use windows at all now, sadly some of my clients do.

That's it I had no choice. I am a sys admin so one of my guys needed his PC reformatted... For me it will be many flavors of linux until the end!

    I share your pain.

I had stopped using Windows on a regular basis but had two laptops that had been in hibernation for around two months. I switched them both on and had to reboot each one several times in order to install all the updates and then had to go through all my programs trying to find out which ones had been updated, download the updated program, install it and possibly reboot again.

Updating Windows is fine if you're using it all the time and can install updates and updated programs as they are released. Both laptops are now switched off and packed away.

    What's Windows 7?!

The best thing that came off MS Windows ever was Word 2000.

Visual Studio for me...I can't find an IDE which even comes close. This is one of the few reasons I am struggling to break free from Windows.
