What happens to add-ons or installed programs after upgrading?

If I upgrade from ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 LTS, what will happen to the firefox add-ons and preinstalled programs like xemacs, gimp etc? Will I have to reinstall those after upgrading? Also what about existing configurations (like network, apparmor etc)? Are these required to be done afresh after upgrading?

if you do an upgrade via the package manager you will keep all your firefox bits and installed apps

A related issue: If I have ubuntu 10.04LTS, can I use a live CD for 12.04LTS to upgrade or in that case will I have to do a fresh installation of ubuntu?

I think there is now an option but I've never used it
