Cannot Recover Password

While trying to install updates their was a prompt for the password, this is my father's machine and I believe that he had not actually set a password. He manually reset it and now is still unable to login, how else can the password be reset? I'm not sure as to any other details, he just told me he can't reset the password and I must fix it O_o

Should help you a lot. Basically, Ubuntu has a 'manual override' at boot time.
