Physical button toggles built-in wireless card -- button doesn't work

Laptop: hp 6735b with broadcom43xx (not sure which) wireless card

The laptop came with Vista and the wireless toggle button works when running Vista. Enter Ubuntu. Proprietary drivers detected and installed, but external physical button remains in 'disabled' state (indicated by an orange glow, blue glow when enabled) no matter how many times I press it. Laptop also has external volume/mute buttons which work under Ubuntu. I don't care so much about making the wireless button work, I just want to use the wireless card. How to circumvent button and effect enabling of wireless device (or get button to work, if this is easier)?

Just to clarify my question: All I really want to know is how to enable/disable a device. For instance, in a Windows GUI I can go to device manager, see a list of devices, and enable/disable a device. What is the Ubuntu equivalent of this?

Device Manager Equivalent: System Profiler and Benchmark

    Installation:
    1) Launch Ubuntu Software Center
    2) Type in 'profiler'
    3) Click System Profiler and Benchmark
    4) Download!

NOTES: I'm not so sure it enables/disables wireless cards. Check for yourself.
