Re: Gnome 3: Pleasant surprise
Certainly not alone!
I remember many years ago, when Nintendo released Donkey Kong Country for the SNES (stay with me). Remember that? I'm a sad gamer. But I remember Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of the classic Super Mario games) comments on DKC at the time. He said simply "nice graphics". This was basically his way of saying the game looks great, but it just doesn't have the gameplay where it counts next to Mario World or Yoshi's Island. Damning with faint praise. He was absolutely right of course.
I tend to think of the differences between Unity and Shell in a similar way. Unity looks the part, much more so than Shell, especially in screen shots and videos. But when it comes to usability and friendliness, Shell beats it hands down. It just has a certain feel that Unity lacks, with its complicated menu structure and wee lenses.
But don't pin me as a hater. I've used Unity happily and do like it. But I think Gnome Shell is better. Really glad to see there's going to be a Gnome Shell Ubuntu community version coming out very soon.
