firestarter: Failed to start firewall! check settings...etc

couldn't figure out how to open ports to specific devices on my home network so I installed firestarter, about which I'd heard good things, but when I tried to start it it tells me 'failed to start firewall, an unknown error occurred, check your network device settings & make sure your connection is active"
I ran the wizard as soon as I installed it and it recognized both my wlan0 and eth0 connections and the panel shows activity along with data sent and recieved.
Is it somthing stupid like I didn't disable the built in firewall first?

No other connections other than the one I specified as the internet connection could connect & firestarter couldn't start....Shame, firestarter uninstalled problem solved-ish, would like a full featured firewall if anyone knows of one?
