    Getting more photos on the locoteam portal

    Laura Czajkowski writes about how there should be more images on LoCo team portals. Czajkowski states: "It would be really good to see more photos there as I think a photo is worth a thousand words and really conveys the energy that locoteams bring!"

    September 8th Ubuntu Global Jam at the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco

    Elizabeth Krumbach writes about Ubuntu Global Jam, which she will be hosting at the Wikimedia Foundation on September 8th in San Francisco, California. Krumbach points out that the focus of this year's Ubuntu Global Jam will be on ISO testing.     Request for LoCo Council Nominations

    "LoCo Council is being faced with replacing of two of their current members." Therefore, Chris Crisafulli is sending an e-mail where he calls for "volunteers to step forward and nominate themselves or another contributor for the two open positions." Crisafulli also provides details regarding the current LoCo Council.

    Launchpad News

    Information sharing is now in beta for everyone

    Curtis Hovey informs us that "Launchpad's bug and branch privacy features are being replaced by information sharing that permits project maintainers to share kinds of information with people at the project level." Maintainers can also unshare information with people who leave the project. "No one needs to manage bug and branch subscriptions to ensure trusted users have access to confidential information." Everything can be managed with the usage of API scripts.

    Ubuntu One added to Thunderbird Filelink

    Roberta Nilerud informs us that "in June Mozilla Thunderbird added the Filelink feature" to address the problems associated with attaching large files to emails, and Ubuntu One can now be used to host files. From this point forward, people will be able to download content directly from Ubuntu One.

    How Apple killed the Linux desktop

    Klint Finely of WIRED magazine writes about how the Linux desktop struggles to keep up with Apple's OS X. Finely points out the thoughts of Miguel de Icaza regarding the failure of the Linux desktop: "The real reason Linux lost is that developers started defecting to OS X because the developers behind the toolkits used to build graphical Linux applications didn't do a good enough job ensuring backward compatibility between different versions of their APIs. For many years, we broke people's code. OS X did a much better job of ensuring backward compatibility."

    The truth about Goobuntu: Google's in-house desktop Ubuntu Linux

    Steven Vaugn of ZDNet talks about Thomas Bushnell's unveiling of Goobuntu, Google's in-house edition of Ubuntu. Points of interest include a lack of an official desktop environment, Google is a Canonical Ubuntu Advantage customer, confirmed by Chris Kenyon, though he noted that "Google is not our largest business desktop customer."

    The New 'Pure GNOME' Ubuntu Linux Is Coming This Fall

    A new flavor of Ubuntu is coming this fall with GNOME 3 at its core. A domain name and basic website have been set up at gnomebuntu.org, though details, including its eventual name, remain elusive due to trademark restrictions.

    Ubuntu 12.10 Adds New Photo Lens

    Ubuntu 12.10 will include a new Photo Lens, allowing users to search, filter, and view photos via a new, separate lens. Photo Lens can pull photos locally from Shotwell as well as from online accounts including Flickr and Facebook.

    Stephen Fry: "I use Ubuntu"

    Stephen Fry talks about using Ubuntu because "it seems the friendliest" in a pre-recorded interview for OggCamp 12. He also talks about his journey with computers, which started with a BBC Micro and why he believes Linux has been slow to gain market share.

    Touring the Ubuntu Unity Desktop

    Armando Roggio of Practicalcommerce has produced a short, three part introduction to Unity focusing on Unity's desktop, Unity's panel, and Unity's launcher. Roggio concludes that "Ubuntu's Unity desktop environment is by no means identical to Windows or OS X, but it is familiar enough that almost anyone will soon be able to use it."

    Canonical Drops Alternate CDs from Ubuntu 12.10

    Michael Larabel of Phoronix shares information from the Ubuntu-devel list regarding the decrease of Ubuntu alternate CDs. Larabel states that "Canonical wants to drop the number of ISOs they produce and ship -- in order to reduce their support/QA burden and also for lightening up the mirror/FTP servers."

    Unity 6.4.0 Lands In Ubuntu Quantal Proposed Repository, Brings Dash Previews

    Andrew of Webupd8 informs us how "Unity 6.4.0 has been uploaded to the Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal proposed repositories today, bringing a huge list of bug fixes." Andrew also gives a preview of some new features in Unity 6.4.0, namely the Dash, Unity webapps technology, and magic lamp animation.

    Encrypted Installation Arrives In Ubuntu 12.10

    Saurav Modak of Muktware writes about new features introduced in Ubuntu 12.10. Modak discusses the Encrypted Installation feature which will enable users to encrypt the entire installation - not just the home folder.

    Mihaita Bamburic of BetaNews reviews his own history with Linux, starting with his failure to embrace Red Hat, and his rediscovery of Linux with Ubuntu. Bamburic writes that Ubuntu is "easy to install, easy to use, light on resources, and able to cover basic functionality all without sacrificing its good looks" and that "Windows 8 looks somehow less inspiring."
