    3G connection painfully unreliable

Most of the time I just use WiFi or Wired Ethernet but ocassionally I have to connect while "on the road", like right now.

My 3G modem used to work well most of the time. But it just disconnects intermittendly, sometimes after three minutes, sometimes after 30.

Even more frustratingly, when it disconnects, it will not conenct again until I reboot. I am sure it was better on previous releases - right now I am using KUbuntu 12.04, (last fully updated less than a week ago)

Below is the "event" when the connection gets terminated.
    Code:

I get the same even if I re-plug the 3G modem. Only a reboot allws me to reconnect (for a few minutes)

Also it appears that f I reboot with the 3G modem conencted, I can't connect at all.

    Re: 3G connection painfully unreliable

Sigh... my problems seems to be too elusive.

I noticed mention in many forum posts about something called sakis3g so I downloaded it and this morning I tested it.

    1. rebooted
    2. connected normally (using KDE connection manager)
    3. browsed for a while untill connection failed.
    4. tried several times to re-connect, but it just timed out. This includes moving the 3G USB modem to other USB ports.
    5. Tried sakis3g script. It said that it had connected but the LED on the modem went stable green, which indicates an EDGE only connection. I did get an IP address but could not actually talk. I think address resolution worked, but nothing else.
    6. I disconnected and re-connected, but chose the "unlimited" option in stead of "internet" for APN. This time I got a steady BLUE light on the modem and it worked well for a few minutes (I was able to browse, send email, etc)
    7. Then the modem disconnected and would not reconnect no matter which APN option I selected (sakis3G got the modem to show an EDGE conenction, KDE network manager just timed out each time)

So ... still no stable connection. At this point I would be happy if I could just reliably re-connect after a connection failure.
