now, it seems that its magically appearing. How do I get, and remove line numbers?

If you just want to see or not see the line numbers it is done through the Edit, Preferences menu, View tab. This won't put the line numbers in the actual text.

I also want to see line numbers. So I opened gedit but it doesn't have an Edit button. Do I have to do something to see that?

It's the Edit menu that you need to go to in order to see Preferences.

assuming you use unity desktop interface, check the menu of the active window - you can find it on the top bar once you move your mouse there.

Ahh, way up above the gedit window. That is a strange place to put it. That solves another problem I had which is how to get out of firefox.

Another way would be to press the Alt key to show the HUD screen, then start typing preferences...
