acer aspire 7741z install hangs 12.04

I booted from a USB and the machine worked faultlessly, so I thought I would dual boot (win7), but the latest partition editor was way more complicated than it used to be, so I thought.... lets just stick to LINUX

Sadly after answering the questions (the camera works for the icon selection) the desktop appears but that's it. disk light flashes, but never stops. I left it all night.
Tried again this morning same thing, tried installing from USB booted desktop, same thing.

Thoughts?

What pops into my mind is a problem with graphics. Boot to the grub menu(hold any key after bios clears) ; choose to boot with the "nomodeset" option:

I have just dropped back to 11.04 and that worked first time. I will probably just leave it alone now!
