Backlight changing constantly on its own

I have an Acer laptop running Ubuntu 12.10, recently the back light started to decrease in brightness every 3 to 5 seconds until the screen is black. I'm not sure what starts it, it happens on most of the time after I log in. It doesn't happen on the start up screen or the log in screen. The only way to wake the screen back up is to press any key on the keyboard. This makes my laptop essentially unusable for me, please help.
