Unhappy Firefox crashes running Cinnamon Desktop

    My OP is here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2051275

I found nothing in my Firefox setting that would cause it to crash and I never got a crash report from Firefox to send. During the time all these crashes/freezes occurred I was running the Cinnamon Desktop. I went back to Unity and everything runs smooth. Now my question is could the Cinnamon Desktop be corrupted, or something happened to make it crash/freeze up Firefox and Chromium? Both Browsers reacted the same way. This started after updates that updated the Cinnamon Desktop as well as other things. Any clues as to what is going on? My browsers run fine under Unity. Can or should I remove Cinnamon? If so how do I uninstall Cinnamon.

I would urge you to visit the Ubuntu Software Centre and install 'Gnome Shell'. Then install 'Advanced Settings'. This will allow you to have a desktop environment that works beautifully. Logout then select 'Gnome' at the login screen. There's no need to remove Cinnamon. Just stop using it at login.

If you try Gnome Shell and find you miss a right click or icon placement on the desktop then Advanced Settings will reinstate this. If you want other features like a taskbar style bottom panel then install the required extensions: https://extensions.gnome.org/

Thanks for the suggestion. I Tried Gnome (Classic) and I don't care for the layout. So I went to Unity and have no problems with it. I see quite few people who don't like Unity. I guess that they have used Gnome for a long time and Unity is a foreign desktop and they don't want to learn a new desktop environment, I can understand that. I find the Unity desktop easy and useful. I especially like the Dash. My browsers run great on Unity so I guess I'll just stick with Unity. Thanks again.

Have you tried Gnome 3 Shell rather than Classic? It's a different beast with interesting dynamic workspaces and a quick search:

Please excuse the plain blue wallpaper and the music from U2 if they're not to your taste.
