    Question Chat server?

    Hi All,
I am running Ubuntu, with Apache http, and php. I want to set up a video chat server so I can communicate with people. I heard that empathy was a way to do that but I haven't found any tutorials. More often what I find is how to set up the empathy client. Is empathy what I should be looking at? Are there some good tutorials I am missing? Is their any easy way to get this done?

I want video chat so when I'm drawing game characters other users can collaborate on the pictures I'm drawing. Id like to be able to stream from my webcam, as a user, from any location that I am at.
Can anyone help me out with this?

    Skype does Video rather well.
    and has fancy screen-sharing too.

Windows assumes the user is an idiot.
    Linux demands proof.

    Howdy,

There is no easy solution for a video and voice server. However, you can try Mumble and maybe something like Camfrog.

For relay chat use Jabber or read http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/IRC/

    Re: Chat server?

Thinking some more, what i can do for now is set up a text based chat in one part of the site, and a video stream in the other. A friend of mine uses flash to allow multiple users to stream video, but then has all sorts of issues where ppl decide to stream inappropriate stuff.

The link on IRC was decent, answered some questions.
When I solve this, Ill post code naturally.

For voice, mumble-server works great and has clients for PC, Mac, Linux and even a free iPhone app. I setup one today and it was very quick-n-easy.

If you want a fully featured text chat without flash, check out Balloons.io. Though it requires node.js, it is pretty fully featured
