MS Access like tool to develop simple applications?

Many, many years ago I used MS access to quickly build some simple applications. Simplistic VB type scripting and prebuilt GUI elements.

Does any such thing exist for a gnome desktop?

The program called "Base" that comes with OpenOffice and LibreOffice is an Access-like program. I use it from time to time to move data between my desktop and a remote PostgreSQL server. To be honest, though, the main reason why I still have a copy of Win7 running in a VirtualBox virtual machine on my desktop is to use MS Access. I can connect with it to those same databases using ODBC. I have one application that I use for a month or so every year with a lot of relational tables. (It runs an online NCAA March Madness game.) While I can write the SQL queries by hand if I need to, sometimes it's just easier to use Access to create the links and extract the fields I need.

To use base, you will need to install a java runtime - openjdk-6-jre will do nicely. Base is rather like access, as I remember it.

Another possibility is kexi - http://www.kexi-project.org/ . I have never tried it so this is not a recommendation, just a note that it exists.

Check Gambas. Use the software centre to install it.
