'precise' is no longer under development — say what?

Every so often, Compiz crashes (I'm using 12.04 64-bit fully updated).

I get the standard message asking whether or not I wish to restart (no, don't, because it has already restarted by itself) and whether or not to report it (yes, please report it).

After some seconds, I get the following, bizarre prompt:

Eh, what? Precise is no longer under development? That's a weird response to the error.

Well, I don't know what to do, because none of the other options is suitable.

So, this is what it says:

Well. Now I really don't know what to do! That's not how other error reports work!

How do I report this error?

you can report manually in launchpad.

otherwise i think it's correct. precise is no longer developed. only bugs are fixed and security holes patched.
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.

I received a number of proposed updates for Apport quite a while ago and since I assumed that they were included with 12.04 .1 . August 16 was the final release note freeze but I am still receiving proposed updates.

Thanks. Perhaps I should use ubuntu-bug instead, as it collects information. I'll do that next time it happens.

True. But the point is that it is an inappropriate response to reporting a bug! When other things crash, it lets me report them.

Sadly there seems to be very little interest in fixing 12.04 bugs:

Well, I haven't personally noticed a lack of desire to fix the bugs, but it certainly can be frustrating when your particular bug is marked at a lower priority.

The problem in this thread was that I didn't know what to do when trying to report a bug. But I shall use ubuntu-bug next time it happens.

I suspect that original message may be caused by an early pre-release installation of 12.04.

I have never seen it on the apport crashes on the 12.04 systems I have set up.

Hmm… Maybe I should report that message, if it is a hangover from testing. I downloaded and installed 12.04 only after it had been officially released.

Re: 'precise' is no longer under development — say what?

I used to be under a similar mis-understanding about bugs and development.

    1. Any stable release is 'no longer under development
      - currently 13.04 is under development.
    2. Being under development does not have anything to do with support
    3. Once a version of Ubuntu is release bugs require an SRU (Stable Release Update)
      https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates
    4. Here is a post I wrote about this topic - it is not that there is no interest in fixing bugs, but there is a much more stringent process to doing so.
