Are there any files kept after installing ubuntu over Win7?

So, I decided to replace my Windows 7 with ubuntu, but I need to keep some data. So, when I install ubuntu, is the whole C drive formatted, or does it just delete the windows folder?

    Many thanks!

If you select Replace Windows with Ubuntu during the insallation, the entire disk will be formatted. If this is your first time using installing Linux, the safest thing would be to back up the required files to an external disk first.

If you're new to Ubuntu and Linux, you would be well-advised to install alongside Windows, rather than over the top of it. It will cost you some HDD space, but that's it. Down the road, if you've been Using Ubuntu for a while and determined that you don't need Win7 for anything, then you can still remove Windows and give the rest of your HDD to Ubuntu.
    Jane, stop this crazy thing!
