How to run Dual Monitors on 2008 Macbook Pro?

I am trying to get a second monitor to connect to my 2008 Macbook Pro laptop running ubuntu. I have gone into the nvidia-settings and chosen to run the second monitor as a separate x-server and after a reboot can get it to display simply as a white screen where the cursor is a black x.

I am using Nvidia driver version 295.49 if that is any help.

I also notice that in the general Ubuntu Displays, I have yet to see the extra monitor detected.

I would appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks!

I was having the same problem also. I was able to get it running but going into xserver and choosing twin view, which makes it one monitor, with my external as the primary. I then saved the configuration so that it always recognizes my monitor whenever its connected. You do have to log out and then back in for it to take effect. The only thing Im having trouble with is to get video to play full screen on my external. For some reason, it still recognizes my laptop as the primary and goes to full screen there. Hope this helps!
