Question xfce desktop settings not saved across login/logout

I just upgraded to Precise and contracted an annoying problem. Even though I have 'save my desktop settings on logout' checked, everytime I login I get a blank slate, no terminals or other apps. Its better than not having a desktop at all, but I am wondering what is causing this problem, permissions on a .cache or something? I have attached, the .cache, .gconf and .conf directory listings in a tar.gz file which contains an out.txt of the output. If anyone can take a look and let me know if they see something, much appreciated.

Re: xfce desktop settings not saved across login/logout

Untick it, makes some changes to your desktop (e.g. add icon to panel/desktop) and logout / login.

    Did they stick this time?

(You may have ticked the box before making any changes?)

FWIW I don't have this box ticked and desktop changes work OK between logins/boots

If you want e.g. an open terminal on your desktop when you login, put this in application startup

Re: xcfe desktop settings not saved across login/logout

    Perhaps I was not clear.
In 11.10 when I logged out and logged back in, any windows that were opened at the time of the logout were automatically restarted. Now, in 12.04 that no longer seems to work. Apparently it is not supported or there is a problem, since whether I have this box checked or not I get a new desktop everytime. If I add a desktop starter or other icon that does come back, but that is not my problem.

In "session and startup", "general" is the box next to "display chooser on login" ticked?

No, I have checked that and will see if that clears up the problem.

Re: xcfe desktop settings not saved across login/logout

Well, that was very curious. It appeared to solve the problem with Firefox auto-starting, but nothing else, especially my xfce terminal sessions which I am more concerned about. Any thoughts?

Re: xcfe desktop settings not saved across login/logout

Maybe try clearing your sessions cache.

    - Logout and go to the first tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1)
    - login to the console
    - carefully issue this command:
    Code:
    rm -rf ~/.cache/sessions
    - go back to the gui (Ctrl+Alt+F7) and log back in.

You'll need to make some changes and do one more cycle of log-out and log-in to see if anything was saved.

If still not, lets have a look at your ~/.xsession-errors file to see what is happening.
    - log out
    - go to tty1 (Ctrl+Alt+F1)
    - login to the console
    - make a backup copy of the log file (it will get overwritten on a fresh login and we want the old file):
    Code:
    cp ~/.xsession-errors ~/.xsession-errors.BAK
    - go back to the gui (Ctrl+Alt+F7) and log back in
    - post back the link to the log file that is generated by running:
    Code:
    pastebinit ~/.xsession-errors.BAK

Re: xcfe desktop settings not saved across login/logout

Thanks for the reply, as you already have surmised removing the sessions file from .cache did not affect much, it only had Thunar entries in it from what I can tell. I performed the other task as you suggested, there results are here:

    pastebinit ~/.xsession-errors.BAK

It looks like X is crashing on logout which is probably preventing Xfce from properly saving the session. Can you try creating and logging in with a second account on this computer and test the same - to see if its a problem with the system files or just your current login account.

You might also find some interesting information in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/syslog.

It appears the xfce-volumnd is cratering due to a SIGABRT. Not sure why. Here is the /var/log/ for Xorg.
