The boot script output shows grub correctly installed to the mbr and looking to the correct partition. Everything else seems OK, except that you also have grub installed to the boot sector of /dev/sda1 - it shouldn't be there. My guess is that you overrode the default /dev/sda for the installation of grub when you ran the Backtrack installer, or that you mistakenly installed grub to sda1 instead of sda on one of the occasions when you re-installed grub from the live CD.

I'm not sure that is the problem, though. Although grub shouldn't be in the partition boot sector in your setup, I don't believe it would interfere with booting, so I'm puzzled at the moment. I'll contact someone else and get them to have a look at this thread as well.

That could be the problem after all. Let's wait until we get the second opinion - I've pm'd them.

I went ahead and ran boot repair and it didn't fix the no such device error. I am confused by the appearance of the Windows Vista/7 partition, it shouldn't still be there? Also, the numbers/letters after "no such device" match

Hello

Your Ubuntu partition ends far (>100GB) from the start of the disk.

If i were you, i would use Gparted from liveCD to reduce the sda1 partition to 100GB (reduce it from its right-side so that it still starts at the start of the disk). You can create a data partition in the empty space.

Alternatively, you can create a little /boot partition at the start of the disk: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootPartition
