My only suggestion is to use what works for you. What the future has in store for Ubuntu, may or may not meet with your needs/expectations. Thus, it's only logical to remain in the environment that best meets said needs. Perhaps, you might occasionally, check in on the status of Ubuntu for reassessment.

However, posting here has no impact on the Ubuntu devs, as they don't often participate in the forums. If your seeking confrontation or recruiting for Fedora - good luck with that.

Good thoughts. I was hoping that this would likely get developer attention and/or cause other disgruntled linux users to post their solutions to dealing with what I don't like about 12.04. It did the latter pretty well.

The main thing is, if Ubuntu wants to go more mainstream, that's great, but they need to make darn sure things work well. I hope they can eventually take some serious market share from MS. I also think guys like me (engineers who do a lot of computational modeling) will always want lightweight slick OSs without a lot of heavy GUI frontend.

As I said, the devs don't live here and I would be extremely surprised if they even know your thread exists. Most disgruntled Ubuntu users I know have already decided to switch or will shortly after EOL for 10.04.

I'm not a big fan of heavy weighted GUI's either. But many PC users enjoy glitzy GUI's. Some historical threads I've read in this section, complained about the lack of glitz & glitter in previous versions of Ubuntu. I even recall, reading complaints about the color "brown". Which was a Ubuntu standard when I first starting using it.

Go figure, I think it just come down to what one expects from their OS and there's just no way to please everyone. Which may be one of the reasons Canonical released alternative versions (X,K&L). I'm a retired process engineer (due to disability) and agree that one doesn't need a glitzy OS for modeling, programming a PLC or for most engineering processes. I much prefer a minimal desktop with limited startup apps. and no clutter. However, one could argue that I don't represent the mainstream PC user.

I see no reason to bash it here, as some users really enjoy the new Ubuntu releases. I respect their choice and only hope they respond accordingly. It's been my experience that complaining here accomplishes little. As it's for entertainment purposes only. No Devs.

    Good Luck

Not only you, but A/V production too needs snappy and responsive GUI. Which is why the A/V edition of Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, is based around XFCE.

As stated, Xubuntu is awesome. I'd definitely recommend it as it's solid, fast and responsive, which is what I prefer over eye candy.
