Gigabit ethernet connectors?

Loking at the Samsung Chromebook specs, and picture gallery, I see that the gigabit ethernet connector slot looks somewhat 'T' shaped. (Not at all RJ45 shaped)

I have not yet used or found out much about gigabit but what I have seen so far suggests it is backwards compatible with earlier connectors, physically at least.

Am I missing something?

It probably just uses an external RJ-45 adapter to connect to a normal cable.

The old pcmcia ethernet adapters used a similar setup as the physical size/profile was to small for a RJ-45 socket.

I actually still have one (3Com) and it works out of the box but I never use it.

Out of the box, you mean with Linux? I can't remember the exact model that my brother used. But he definitely used it with Linux. Back in the days where it was quite of a challenge to get your hardware working with Linux
