12.04 wireless mouse problem on brand new laptop

    Hey all,

So I'm having a really odd problem with my wireless mouse on a fresh install of 12.04.

    First the hardware:

The laptop is a new Dell XPS 14 (L421x), an Ivy Bridge i7 processor, with USB3, Intel 4000 graphics with dedicated nVidia graphics as well.

The mouse is a Logitech Revolution w/ 'darkfield' (i.e. - it works on glass)

    Now, the problem:

Upon a boot, the receiver is indeed listed in lsusb. However, often the mouse doesn't show up in xinput --list, though sometimes it does (maybe 1 in 5 boots). Additionally, often after a suspend/resume cycle, the mouse will disappear from xinput --list

    Now, the odd part:

By unplugging and replugging the mouse a few times (sometimes just once, sometimes 5-6 times), I can get it to show back up in the xinput --list

    lsusb output:
    Code:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1bcf:2899 Sunplus Innovation Technology Inc.
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 8087:07da Intel Corp.
xinput --list output when the mouse is working:
    Code:

The wiredness continues! After a resume, the x11 virtual pointer still shows up in xinput --list, but the mouse dosen't work!

    Any ideas or additional info?

    Thanks!

    does the following information help:

    http://askubuntu.com/questions/80638...like-usb-mouse

it could be something else than autosuspend - in that case I'm out of ideas for now

    2.6.35.7-TOI-plus

    gcc version 4.5.1 (Gentoo Hardened 4.5.1 p1.0, pie-0.4.5)

Re: 12.04 wireless mouse problem on brand new laptop

Thanks for the idea, but unfortunately this seems like an entirely different problem.

    1) once the mouse is working, it works flawlessly in normal desktop operation

    2) oddly - the mouse can be quite jumpy/shaky/jerky when running 3d apps with optirun (ala Bumblebee). I'm developing some fetish-like behavior to 'make it work', such as pushing in on the adapter while trying to use the mouse, but I'm pretty sure these are all placebos...

    3) When not working, I can't seem to find any way to get it working short of unplugging and replugging the adapter a number of times (anywhere from once to 7 or 8 times...)

    4) non-functioning can occur at initial boot, or after a suspend/resume cycle.

    5) everything works perfectly in Windows, and everything worked perfectly on my previous system running 12.04

okay, totally nix #2... turns out my HAND is enough to block the signal going from one side of my laptop to the other.

does output of dmesg show anything related to the mouse ?

if you're not sure simply post and make sure you're leaving out MAC addresses or other important info

did you observe any specific pattern when it doesn't work ?

you said with bumblebee - so there could be some interference with the graphics driver or the usb port ...

    try:

    - different usb port
    - different mouse during the same circumstances
    - changing batteries

Re: 12.04 wireless mouse problem on brand new laptop

Having a similar problem with a generic (CPI - China) mouse (that the wife loves). Also a new laptop (Lenovo), dual-boot, but AMD/64.

With Win 7, works great. But Ubuntu doesn't recognize it. Plug a Logitech M310 into the same port and it works fine, with dmesg:
    [ 2.224276] usb 4-4: new full-speed USB device number 2 using ohci_hcd
[ 2.407573] input: Logitech USB Receiver as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.0/usb4/4-4/4-4:1.0/input/input5

[ 2.415975] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid
[ 2.415977] usbhid: USB HID core driver
But with the CPI dongle in, dmesg shows a loop with 'device number' increasing from 0 to 127, then starting again repeatedly until timing out at 2 minutes:

Spent a few hours on this and have no good results. Introducing Ubuntu to the spouse ("Look, it's great!") when her favorite mouse won't work is making this a fiasco. She's booting into Win 7 instead. "But honey, Windows sucks plug nickels."

"Yes," she says, "but my mouse works."

did you observe any specific pattern when it doesn't work ?
every time on boot, on resumes, and every time the receiver is unplugged. Note that the end of the dmesg output shows a successful recognition. If there is a way to force this same behavior without physically unplugging and replugging the device, that alone would be a HUGE help.

you said with bumblebee - so there could be some interference with the graphics driver or the usb port ...
I suppose anything is possible, but if I recall, it was happening before I installed bumblebee

    - different usb port
    - different mouse during the same circumstances
    - changing batteries
There are only 2 USB ports on the system, both USB3, both behave the same

Haven't tried a different mouse. I'll try one next time my wife gets up and walks away from her computer for a few minutes

The mouse is a rechargeable, and again, I can't imagine, given it works perfectly in Windows, that batteries are the problem.

Will post again when I've tried my wifes mouse.

Re: 12.04 wireless mouse problem on brand new laptop

Have you found the solution? I have exactly the same problem on Asus G55VW notebook. I have to plug/unplug receiver several times before it starts working (max 15 times so far) inside USB 3.0.

It works just fine when I connect it via usb 2.0 hub, but that is not an option for everyday use.

no fix, but thanks for suggesting unplugging and plugging in multiple times .

Same problem, my unifying receiver worked on my old laptop (and Ubuntu12.04) but occasionally needed a single unplug/replug to get it working.
