    Low volume output via USB

Hi folks. I'm not sure if this is a problem with my OS or with my hardware or even both but I'm hoping you guys can help. My main PC bit the big one a couple of weeks ago so I'm now using an old laptop with Ubuntu 11.10 installed. It's only used as a glorified jukebox to be honest so to this end I bought one of these -

I have it connected to my laptop via USB and to my amp (Marantz PM6004). The trouble is that the output volume is much lower than all other sources going into the amp. Whereas my PS3 and Humax Freesat box only need the volume set to around 9 o'clock the laptop and DAC combo need the control wound all the way around to 3 o'clock! I've checked and rechecked all the audio controls in Ubuntu and all are set to max. Strangely, there's a volume control on the DAC which does absolutely nothing.

Anyone got any ideas what I can do about this? I realise the DAC is just a cheap one and so this may be the limiting factor. Many thanks in advance for any and all help.
