Re: Download, extract and install???
Thank you sir, that was a great help. The actual steps I needed to take ended up slightly different, but without your help I did not know what to try.
Here's what I ended up doing:
There were two "CUPS" files in the extracted .deb directory, one ..."cups-common_"....etc, and the other ..."cups-ufr2_us_"...etc (us instead of uk).
Right clicking did not give me a choice of "software center" but did give me "open with GDebi package installer".
I took a gamble...and it didn't work! I got an unsatisfied dependency message, but it was clear from the message that I needed to install the ..."common"...file before I installed the ..."ufr2"...file. So I backed out and tried it that way.
GDebi informed me that the installation was successful for both files, so I ran the add printer routine again. My printer was quickly identified and the program automatically began a search for drivers, then prompted me to print a test page, which was sitting in the output tray by the time I made it from my cave in the garage to the printer in the house.
Happiness reigns.
Thanks again!
The best thing about Ubuntu is that any idiot can install it and have a workable Linux machine. The worst thing is that I am still an idiot.
