Need an ethernet to Phone line adapter.

A family member of mine gave me an old Compaq Presarrio Laptop (Windows 95) I plan on using Puppy Linux or Slitaz on it so she can view emails etc. But only one problem, only a phone/dial up modem. Are there any Ethernet to phone adapters?

You're probably better off getting a USB Wifi NIC like the Linksys AE1200...

I do not think such a thing has been made.

I don't think it would be possible either.

Your best bet would be looking for a very very old pcmia network adapter.
(Does the laptop have pcmia slots available?)

Or maybe even a parallel port network adapter?

I assume the computer does not have usb?

Honestly though, you would probably save money on this project by getting a newer laptop.

Even with a light weight distro, your talking about a computer thats probably at least 15 years old.
And on top of that, its a laptop. (So set the technology bar back yet another 5 years)

    Probably has 8 - 16MB of RAM.
Hard drive capacity might be measured in MB. (I'd say 2GB MAX)
And Processor is probably between 60 and 200 MHz

I can think of very little practical uses for this laptop.
(I mean, there's old, and then there's OLD)

If its running Windows 95, there is a very good chance that it does not have USB ports.

HAHA people like you are too dumb to know that they make adapters. Further more my link is way more helpful then your lmgfy(whatever shits called link). /end theory /start help.

that better. Can I hand feed the pigeons today!?

that's how you fix all compatibility issues?

Re: Need an ethernet to Phone line adapter.

I believe that link points to a crossover adapter, so you can network 2 computers using a standard cat6 cable with RJ45 connectors, instead of needing a crossover cable, or network switch,
(Though a useful adapter, that actually has absolutely nothing to do with the subject at hand)

And as for a physical RJ11 to RJ45 adapter, I do not believe that would allow you to connect to a local network using a dial up modem.

That would make the plugs fit together, but it would not do anything useful.

I'm sure I can build an adapter that would allow you to connect a light bulb in place of your car battery, but I'm fairly certain that will not allow you to start your car using a light bulb.

And suggesting a newer laptop has nothing to do with compatibility.
Just saying the solution will cost money, and something that old may not be worth it.

You could probably find a used laptop that is twice as good, and needs no adapter, for the same price as an adapter.
