    12.10 & unetbootin

    hi, this is weird...

startup disk creator was hanging,so thought i would give unetbootin a try.

everything seemed to work ok, so rebooted & selected usb from bios menu (ps i have successfully booted from this usb before & i don't own another one, so if it has developed a fault, so be it)

anyhows, booting from usb i get a black screen with what can only be described as a distorted letter G, followed by 2 square-ish smiley faces....then nothing happens.

if i press any key, this pattern of 3 characters repeats with each keystroke ad infinitum.

reboot to hard drive works without hitch.

have googled "2 smileys on boot" and there is some suggestion it may be malware, but advice seems garbled. [edit: & very old, 1997!]

no idea if 12.10 related (i would have thought highly unlikely) but i know you guys might have a suggestion or 2...

I filed a bug a few days ago against usb-creator-gtk. haven't checked to see if it has been fixed - but it more or less hung a few times today also.

edit* btw .. I have been thinking that perhaps SDC may be vulnerable at times where a possible mutex can be introduced or even an interceptor, thereby grabbing a malware packet. I highly doubt it .. but some people get pretty active on this...

Why don't you try fixing the USB with gparted.
Make sure you are looking at sdb which should be the USB. Unmount it and run a repair on it. Maybe you might have to delete it and start over with it. I had to do this with one awhile ago. The stick might not be bad but just corrupt.

I just downloaded new daily of 12.10 ubuntu and had the same weird screen issue. The screen was garbled with odd letters along the top couple of inches with SYNAPTIC PKG MANAGER in broken capital letters. I hit a key and it continued to install normally, with a system fail error on restart. The hdd was clean.

A lot of text on shut down about fonts, and "mixed values cannot be used in 'test'"
The same shutdown text was on the previous install that I was replacing.
Also a problem with Nautilus won't let me unmount a shared file.

My machine is old and tired so I'm not blaming it all on the iso.
    Will reinstall.

    Re: 12.10 & unetbootin

Happened to use unetbootin yesterday to ck. something on SolusOs, where it worked fine.
So went & redid a 12.10 just now - no issue.

Here a couple of usb's are just used for boot disks so they always are one when re doing
In that case unet popped up a message about keeping or overwriting - I chose 'yes to all'
Did you get that? & are you creating add. space? - I always go no to that on both unet & sdc

Verily. I use gparted to format the whole USB to F32, do a sudo sync, then try unetbootin.

On topic, was it a QQ .iso daily build?

On some .iso like late Ubuntu's I do a gparted format F32, sync, then do a
    sudo dd if=quantal-desktop-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb oflag=direct bs=1048576
    sudo sync

    Jerry

p.s., Ubuntu Alpha and Beta times, things like creating a bootable USB or doing an install are frequently buggy for me.
