Network-Manager applet no longer showing signal strength

    Hi,

I booted up my laptop this morning to discover that although I'm connected to the internet wirelessly, the wireless strength indicator in my notification panel is greyed out and if I click on it no APs are displayed (please see picture).

If I run iwconfig, I get confirmation that I am indeed connected without issues to my router:

    Code:
    iwconfig eth1
    eth1 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"myAP"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: (my AP's mac)
              Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Sensitivity=8/0
              Retry limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
              Power Management:off
Link Quality=90/100 Signal level=-39 dBm Noise level=-89 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
              Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
My wireless card is a Intel PRO/Wireless 2200.

Any ideas what might be causing this? I'm connected through WPA2 personal and DHCP is set to Automatic in "Edit Connections".

Could be Network-Manager is not managing the network just now. Try a reboot or check

for instructions on restarting the network manager. I'd disconnect the wifi connection, restart the network manager, then connect up using the network manager.

Thank you for your response Kalanac. I have tried rebooting with no success, and "killall nm-applet; nm-applet" does not solve the problem.

Do you have any other programs or scripts that might be connecting your wireless?

Not as far as I'm aware. I've not installed any new software for a few months, although there was a large update last night which I installed before shutting down my computer.

Re: Network-Manager applet no longer showing signal strength

    Hmmm, try re-installing nm-applet:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge nm-applet
    sudo apt-get install nm-applet
The purge will get rid of the program and the config files for it so the install will start from a blank slate.

Re: Network-Manager applet no longer showing signal strength

    Hi,

    I ran
    Code:
sudo aptitude purge nm-applet && sudo aptitude install nm-applet
but this gave me an error about there being no package called nm-applet. I instead replaced nm-applet with network-manager.

After getting back online to a wired connection through the terminal (I had forgotten that I'd lose my wireless access when purging network-manager), I reinstalled network-manager and rebooted. Unfortunately, the problem remains. Is there any debug info that I can get out of network-manager that will assist me in working out what's going on?

Unfortunately I'm stumped at this point Hopefully a guru will pick up the issue. Have you tried googling similar issues?

Re: Network-Manager applet no longer showing signal strength

    Thanks for your help anyway.

I've searched for similar issues, but so far, everything that I'm finding is 2 or more years old. I've now noticed that a list of wireless APs is slowly generated by nm-applet in the left click menu, but the signal strength is still not displayed.

Re: Network-Manager applet no longer showing signal strength

I now believe this to be a bug associated with last night's kernel update. If I reboot and select a previous linux kernel, I do not get this problem.
