Understand the Unix file-system, learn about Shell scripting and Python to get you off, so I would say!
People resist progression in every facet of life, computers are no different. Inevitably though, progress passes them by, and they become like dinosaurs...

If you are introduced in C , download the Linux kernel sources from http://www.kernel.org/ , and start tinkering .

Make sure you know what you're asking ... UNIX is NOT the same as Linux, nor is its default scripting language. So, if Linux is what you want, then you're OK with the advice give here.

    Re: Unix commands

honestly I just started getting in the habit of doing everything out of terminal. It was a slow learning process but it got my head around learning syntax and all that. And how unix environments are structured. Those skills carried over into writing bash scripts and now into C++ and Python.

    Thumbs up Re: Unix commands

You are in a programmer's dream .... only limitation is your own imagination!
It is a steep learning curve ... but, you only get out of it what you put into it.

    Re: Unix commands

You have to find it interesting/enjoyable otherwise you will get nowhere in programming. That is first rule. All other thinks is just not that important you can get a tuns of information from web for free. So if you feel like you wanna this, then go for it!
