12.04 on asus k53s wireless problem

I have a desktop and a laptop both dual booted and I also just got a wireless router. There are no connection problems on the 11.04 on the desktop and in Windows on the laptop but in Ubuntu it looses packages and is deathly slow. I turned off the firewall and it didn't help but beyond that I have no idea what to do.
