Actually, glossy screens typically do slightly better under bright light than matte because the finish lets the light bounce through the screen and reflect away, whereas matte finishes will diffuse the light over the entire screen and wash out the image.

Matte does have an advantage when you have two areas contrasting brightness, such as an office (with lights on the ceiling and a dark floor) because it will smoothly fade the glare, rather than reflecting it.
