Talking Real background colour for desktop images with pics plus transparent bits

Sometimes I like to use photos that are differently sized than my desktop or that otherwise have areas that are transparent.

But let me stick to the idea of a photo that is not the same dimension as my desktop. I'd like to use it, but the edges not covered on the desktop are coded in the image as transparent.

These areas turn out as black on a standard Precise desktop. This means that the basic background colour of the Precise desktop is black... and there's no apparent way to change it.

But can it be possible to adjust the background colour so that it shines through the transparent bits of whatever desktop image is used? This would be cool.
