Question Wireless Driver not working with Acer Aspire 5560 Broadcom STA Ubuntu 12.04

    Hello Ubuntu Forums,

I just bought an Acer Aspire 5560. I installed Ubuntu from scratch on clean SSD from Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit Live CD. The wireless worked (before installing updates) until I installed the Broadcom STA driver from Additonal Drivers in System Settings. Looking back on it, I'm not sure why I installed the driver if it was already working. Anyways, it said my Broadcom STA driver is activated but it wouldn't detect any wireless networks. So I tried many different things to try and fix this, and since I'm new to Ubuntu/linux I think I'm tangled. Where I've left off is, I installed the Broadcom hybrid 64bit driver from Broadcom website manually after I deactivated the Broadcom STA proprietary driver.
Looks like I still have 2 drivers installed though..

Here's the output to some helpful commands:

Re: Wireless Driver not working with Acer Aspire 5560 Broadcom STA Ubuntu 12.04

Wouldn't be quicker and easier to reinstall?

Anyway, if you want to troubleshoot it, add the outputs of the following:

    dpkg -l | grep bcmwl-kernel-source

    lsmod | grep -e brcm -e b43 -e ssb

Can you also post a link to the driver you've installed from Broadcom's site.

    Let's shoot trouble

    dpkg -l | grep bcmwl-kernel-source
    Code:
    rc bcmwl-kernel-source
    5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu6.1
Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source
    lsmod | grep -e brcm -e b43 -e ssb
    Returned blank

The website where I got the Broadcom Driver is here:
    http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php/

Looks like you still have the STA driver installed. Make sure it's deactivated, or remove it with
    "sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source".

Reboot after that, and hopefully, some other module will get loaded.

Re: Wireless Driver not working with Acer Aspire 5560 Broadcom STA Ubuntu 12.04

With all due respect to my esteemed colleague mikewhatever, wl, provided by bcmwl-kernel-source, is correct for this device and should NOT be removed.
    Broadcom Corporation BCM43227 802.11b/g/n [14e4:4358]
I'd be interested in what the message logs say about this:
    Code:
    dmesg | grep -e wl -e eth

    After removing bcmwl-kernel-source I ran:

    dmesg | grep -e wl -e eth

I expect you'd better reinstall it:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
    sudo modprobe wl
    dmesg | grep -e wl -e eth
"Oh, Ubuntu, you are my favorite Linux-based operating system" --Dr. Sheldon Cooper, B.Sc., M.Sc., M.A., Ph.D., Sc.D.

    udevd[604]: renamed network interface eth1 to eth2
Your readings look pretty solid, actually. I'm not sure the udev rename is significant, but let's see what else we can see:
    Code:
    sudo iwlist eth2 scan
    iwconfig eth2
    rfkill list all
Please make these readings with the ethernet cable detached. Any errors, warnings, etc. are significant; please post them. Thanks.

Re: Wireless Driver not working with Acer Aspire 5560 Broadcom STA Ubuntu 12.04

There were no results for the first command...

    iwconfig eth2
    Code:
    eth2 IEEE 802.11 Access Point: Not-Associated
              Link Quality:5 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
              Rx invalid nwid:0 invalid crypt:0 invalid misc:0
    rfkill list all
    Code:
    0: brcmwl-0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
    1: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
When I click on the wireless at the top I can see Wireless Networks but it's grayed out. It's not picking up any networks. I even tried to manually add my wireless network, but it prompts for password, I type it in, and then it tries to connect and prompts for password again (i know my password is correct for sure).

Also, why does it say eth2 is BCM4358, but when I do lspci -nn it says Network Controller is BCM43227...
