Thumbs down Re: Valve Announcement - Steam client coming to Ubuntu

Many years ago I switched from Windows to Ubuntu. Never looked back but not having Steam was a regret. Bitter sweet actually as I was REALLY REALLY addicted to Counter Strike. So it was purposeful and helped me.
Now the announcement of Steam on Ubuntu has my gut churning and an old addiction rearing it's head. I simply can't wait for it to come out.
3 Cheers for the developers!!!! You rock!

I suspect a lot of other people will be saying the same thing if this lives up to our expectations.

I don't have much of a gaming computer but hey, I can play Counter-Strike finally.

The latest blog post from Valve:

I think the most important part is that they are working with Nvidia to improve the drivers in linux. This will only help the entire eco system. I know they are not going to open source their drivers, but this should improve the entire desktop experience.

Now that Valve's linux team successfully managed to master fps in L4D2, so in my opinion will we can see this game on our desktops at October/September. ]

I think, that Steam will give to linux not only games but also will contribute to improve the situation of the closed NVIDIA/AMD drivers.

    It would be great

I would be surprised if they released steam with only Left 4 Dead 2 of their own games available.

I would think they would release it towards the end of the year after porting over 2-3 more games, but this is all speculation of course.

I have a small question, as Linux Mint is based on ubuntu it should work perfectly right?? I mean when it says "supports ubuntu" does it mean all distros built on ubuntu as well?

Steam will work on all distros, but on Phoronix I've read, that will at first run on Ubuntu.

What it means is that it will officially support Ubuntu right away, and may officially support other distros down the road.

Unofficially, it will be running on almost every distro out there within a day of release. Others just won't be able to get tech support from Valve.
