Essentially: There may be a Beta or some other form of Steam on Linux before the end of the year, but the full Steam on Linux push doesn't seem to happen until February.
If ANYTHING will cause people to abandon Windows for the far better (and free!) operating system, it will be top-shelf games. And I mean games for the PC, not just a bunch of console ports.
Just because Windows 8 abandons the WIMP paradigm will probably not drive the avarage gamer away from Microsoft. However, no viruses, no intrusions, no DRM just might.

If something like a 'steambox' was to be developed it would surely run a Linux OS.
And IF that happened the number of AAA games released on Linux could balloon

I wouldn't mind a new console - a Steam Box running on Linux would be pretty awesome .
