Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

I have a wireless peer to peer network setup per this HOW TO . On the Windows XP machine I have mapped the Shared folder on the Ubuntu machine as a drive. So far so good. The weird part is if when I first start up my computers once the cards have connected if I try to access the Ubuntu machine first from Windows I get an error. If I try to access the Windows machine from Ubuntu it connects fine. I can then go to the Windows machine click on the mapped drive, enter the password and all is fine.
Why do I have to access the Windows machine first?

Has anyone used the instructions in Post #1, on 10.04? It worked perfectly on 9.10, and frankly, I can't see why it doesn't work on 10.04.

    Code:
    ken@ubuntu:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/samba stop
    sudo: /etc/init/samba: command not found
    ken@ubuntu:~$
I get the same error when running start or stop, so I'm assuming it's been moved somewhere...?
    Got Ubuntu?

Hmmmm..... init.d being interpreted as init? Maybe a clue. I'm running 9.04 at the moment, so I'm unable to check.

Hmm, somehow that ".d" fell off in the copy paste. I just ran the command, and its definitely "init.d" that isn't found...

In that case, I would take a look at the properties of the samba package: Start Synaptic ("System" -> "Administration" -> "Synaptic Package Manager"), find the samba package in the list of packages, right-click, and select "Properties." Display the "Installed Files" tab, and see if you can find the "samba" file that you're looking for.

    Try running

    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/smbd restart
Looks like samba moved to smbd... (On my 10.04 server at least)... weird.

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

I figured it out. Sort of a dumb thing on my part. I uninstalled my WUBI install a few weeks back and did a side by side install. I of course had to set my network back up. In haste I type the rules to allow the Windows machine to access the Ubuntu machine backwards in UFW so effectively was still blocking until I would initiat contact from the Ubuntu machine. It's working fine now.

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

Dear Stormbringer, I'm hoping you can help me out. I followed your guide to set up Samba, but it was only partially successful. I can access files on my Ubuntu 9.10 machine from my Windows XP Pro machines, but I can't access any Windows XP machines from the Ubuntu machine. I'm a rookie with Samba, so I probably missed something. Do I have to set anything up on the Windows machines so that the Ubuntu machine can access them? I've been working on this for days, and it's starting to get a little blurry, if you know what I mean.
    Thanks,
    Peter V.

How exactly do you try to access the XP machines from Ubuntu?
And what exactly happens--e.g., what error messages do you get?

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

I go click on places -> network -> Windows network.

Once there, I see 2 "workgroups". One is my network workgroup named "HADEN". The other one is named "WORKGROUP", and I have no idea why that's there. (I've changed it in my smb.conf file to HADEN.)

I click on the HADEN workgroup and I get this message:

Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server.

I've also tried the "connect to server" option in the places menu, but it doesn't list SMB as a server option.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for replying,
    Peter V.
