It was the install that had to be launched from Desktop. I didn't pay enough attention to your script.

I have Firefox32 all set up now.

You know this Ubuntu is supposed to be an easy version of Linux. Your scripts are great, but. . . .

What is most disturbing is the sudden difficulty I seem to be having with my little HP printer. The 32 bit v. 64 bit stuff makes sense, but I had a devil of a time with my old deskjet with my old computer running Breezy. Not so with earlier versions of Linux. Cups used to be one of those packages that just plain worked. Things seem to have gone backward.

I will work it out, I always do, but I have to say that new desktop users are going to be frustrated.

Do you have mplayer and the win32codecs installed?

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64

In an effort to install my printer, I thought that maybe I should just reinstall Ubuntu. Why not following Kilz's scripts I had gotten Firefoxt32 to install properly. Life was good. I could do it again.

Wrong. I reinstalled Ubuntu using the alternate disk and found that I mistakenly installed the wrong version of unbuntu 64. Apparently I installed the server version. I spent most of last night hunting down lots and lots of missing software. Finally, I threw up my hands and reinstalled again. This time I had the right version but still some of the packages were missing. I had to hunt them down and am just now back to where I was 24 hours ago.

All of this is to suggest that many of the problems I have read in this thread are similar to those I experienced last night. I suspect a comment as to the installed version of Ubuntu64 might be in order.

What problems are you having on a fresh install?

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64

I can't use my printer. Frankly, it is frustrating. I have tried both a usb deskjet and an old cannon bjc-3000. Both have been recognized. The printer install recommended a driver. Neither of the printers would print a thing. I have tried everything I can think of to get a printer to work. Nothing.

As to your scripts, after I reinstalled the first time I didn't have several of the programs. Linux32, gsfonts-x11, alsa-osso come to mind. All are out of date packages. I reinstalled again, and I had them. Maybe I am wrong but I think that a lot of the programs needed for the scripts reside on a server someplace and are called as part of the generic install process. Ubuntu's servers were really slow yesterday. Maybe they timed out? Heck I don't know, but when I tried to install Firefox after the first reinstall of ubuntu, the script didn't work properly on several different levels. Messing around I got it to work, but only after I paid close attention to the process.

The printer thing is frustrating. I am almost ready to chuck ubuntu. I can't even use the cups administrative package.

Yes, but at least you dont have a lexmark, I did and found the only way to use it was to hook it up to my wifes computer(windows) and then share it. I then set it up as a network printer in cups.
Ill do a look around for a bjc-3000 howto for you. Maybe we can get one working.
Some of the repository servers were offline yesterday. So it may have been hit or miss downloading things, and the scripts download/use apt-get.

Edit, I went looking and found this page, it linked to this page that may help you.

Thanks, I will follow that lead. I have reloaded the gnome printer administration tool, and have posted a new thread here. Maybe somebody can help.
