Could this be causing problems with the 32bit version of Sun Java??
    Close all browsers.
Open a terminal, type in firefox32
    Go here, http://javaboutique.internet.com/aster/

    Do you see the applet?

Whats strange is that firefox32 shares 0 files with 64bit Firefox, not even a plugin or plugin directory. That command installs flash where the 64bit version looks for it, not the 32bit version.

I dont think so, is the symlink good for java in /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins, does the file its pointing to exist??

This all worked fine until recently (I think it was the Hardy install, but I went up to Gutsy on my 64-bit computer only recently beforehand and I might not be remembering correctly). I've tried running the install script again, updating it all, but no luck.

Basically what happens is, Firefox (or Flock, or whatever) cannot translate domain names . . . go to http://64.233.161.104 it works fine, but http://google.ca and it's "server not found".

I checked back in this thread and around December 13th 2006 someone mentioned this issue, but no solution seems to have been ever proffered

Edit: I checked closer and there was talk of IPv6 causing problems, but I deleted all the IPv6 stuff in Static Hosts and nothing has gotten better . . . is there something else I need to do? Or is this a different problem?

Edit the second: Manually checking the entire thread instead of searching, and I did find my answer, but I figure I should re-post this here in case someone else has the same issues:

Thanks gianp! You saved the day for me.

(Man, sometimes I hate the Firefox devs. Make it possible to get to those options without forcing people to remember an arcane quasi-address, sheesh. I guess I'm just not used to the GNOME way of doing things Sorry, sorry, that was flamebait, I'm just rather annoyed that something so simple was so hidden with such little real reasoning).

Did exactly as you said, but just red x for the shoot em up java game.

    Here is my Java config:

When i browse to Aboutlugins in firefox32, I do see the Java 1.06 plugin listed. It's a page long list of enabled Java plugins, but still no working Java.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64

I can confirm the same problem with Kubuntu Hardy x64 Swiftweasel. I tried the installscript and everything worked fine but java is not working. I also tried

    Code:
    sudo update-alternatives --config java
and chosed /usr/lib/jvm/ia32-java-6-sun/jre/bin/java (3) but it still says Loading Java Applet Failed...

    Selection Alternative
    -----------------------------------------------
    1 /usr/bin/gij-4.2
    + 2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/bin/java
    * 3 /usr/lib/jvm/ia32-java-6-sun/jre/bin/java
Has the + something to do with it maybe? I have as the previous poster installed icedtea7 prior in 64bit firefox3b5.

Can you please try and change the ownership of this plugin to you from root.

I believe this would work (?)
    Code:
    sudo chown /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/libnpp.so
    sudo chown /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/libnullplugin.so
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

I was referring to the java plugin symlink that was bold. but the chown command would be
    sudo chown YourUserame:users /path/to/the/file

Open a terminal, type firefox32, look at a page with java on it, do you see any errors in the terminal?
