Mouse turns to hand and won't click

This is happening with more and more frequency:

My cursor will stop working. Or rather, it will still move, but it turns to a hand (like a hand that is moving a window), and it won't accept left, right, or middle clicks.

I've tried (while in this condition):

1. rmmod psmouse / modprobe psmouse
2. compiz --replace
3. metacity --replace
4. opening the nvidia control center and trying to move around with the cursor keys and changing up the configuration
5. opening ccsm and selecting and deselecting options.

Almost at wits end

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated!
