    Proprietary wireless driver problems

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a HP Pavilion dm1 from usb.
While connecting to my wireless modem the proprietary drivers warning showed up. I went to System Settings->Additional Drivers and what every site I read told me to do next is to click the "Activate button" which I can't see because the green light is on and "This driver is activated and currently in use" is on the buttons place. I can see he's trying to connect, but failed every time. It is a Broadcom STA wireless driver.

    Re: Proprietary wireless driver problems

Perhaps you don't really need the STA driver, despite what 'Additional Drivers' says. Let's see more information about your device. Please open a terminal and run and post:
    Code:
    lspci -nn | grep 0280
The pipe symbol | is on the right side of my US keyboard on the same key with \. Thanks.

    Re: Proprietary wireless driver problems

After typing the code in terminal:
    Code:
Network controller [0280] Broadcom Corporation BCM 4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727]
    Additional information:
1)The name of the warning mentioned in the first post is called "restricted drivers available"
    2) From time to time he connects to my wireless connection, but dissconets a minute later and stays dc-ed for most of the time
    3) I still haven't installed ubuntu on my netbook, I'm running ubuntu via BIOS USB boot
    4) When I turn my netbook on in win7 I get the warning " A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken" althought he connects normally and the connection is stable (I read it is normal for some laptops to do so after being in BIOS, don't know if it is relevant to my connection problem in ubuntu)

    Ty for your reply.

    Re: Proprietary wireless driver problems

The STA driver is indeed correct for your device. Let's see if any conflicting drivers are loaded:
    Code:
    lsmod | grep -e bcma -e brcmsmac -e b43 -e wl
    Thanks.

    Re: Proprietary wireless driver problems

Hi, I'm having the same problem. Pasting these codes into my system give
    dirkzobb@dirkzobb-HP-Compaq-nx6325-RU594ES-ABU:~$ lspci -nn | grep 0280
    30:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01)
    dirkzobb@dirkzobb-HP-Compaq-nx6325-RU594ES-ABU:~$ lsmod | grep -e bcma -e brcmsmac -e b43 -e wl
    wl 2646601 0
    lib80211 14040 1 wl

System settings says STA driver is installed and running. No wireless action .... connected via ethernet. My laptop has a wifi switch that lights up blue when running xp. Been trying to get this to work for days and it's driving me crazy

In fact, brcmsmac is correct. Please do:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
    Afterwards, let's do some diagnostics:
    Code:
    dmesg | grep wlan
    rfkill list all
    Thanks.

Yours is a whole different case. Please do:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
    sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
Reboot and let us have your report.

    Hi,
    This is what I've got:
    dirkzobb@dirkzobb-HP-Compaq-nx6325-RU594ES-ABU:~$ rfkill list all
    0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: no

    What next?

    Re: Proprietary wireless driver problems

Hi, Pasted in the stuff, rebooted and this is what I get now:
    [sudo] password for dirkzobb:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
Package bcmwl-kernel-source is not installed, so not removed
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
    fakeroot dkms patch
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

Then tried the auto remove and got this:
    dirkzobb@dirkzobb-HP-Compaq-nx6325-RU594ES-ABU:~$ apt-get autoremove
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
