How can I boost my wifi range?

    Hi

I have an old Dell Latitude D630 with a Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN card running Ubuntu 12.04 and I would like to boost its range to what it was when windows was installed as it was larger.

    any help would be nice.

I've just loaded 12.04 on my Acer Aspire 5633 laptop (Windows XP crashed with a hard-drive fault so I replaced the drive).

My plan is to use a wifi dongle with a detachable aerial, and then plug in an extension aerial wire with a directional aerial pointing towards the router. I've got stuck at the dongle stage as I can't get it to connect reliably yet, I'll let you know if the set-up works once I have overcome the problem.
