I have natty 11.04 installed and have been running Skype 2.2.0.35 for a while. Anyway I decided to upgrade to the new Skype 4 and ran into problems.

After installing the new Skype from the deb file on the Skype site I have found that Skype will not start up. What happens is that when I click on the Skype icon Skype begins to continuously write to the disk and launch what appear to be dozens of identical processes sucking up the CPU. The computer becomes unusable and I have to reboot to release the memory.

To try and get back to a working Skype I purged Skype including the .Skype folder and reinstalled 2.2.0.35 from the Ubuntu Software Center. But I am still having exactly the same problems.

Can anybody offer any ideas how to fix this?
