1333 MHz DDR3 or 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory?

I have asked around about which memory to get. I haven't had a satisfying answer. What I have heard so far is that it really doesn't make a difference. But if that is so, why do the manufacturers bother increasing the speed of their memory?

Where would the different memory speed make a difference? How big an improvement is the faster memory?

Whilst on the topic, would it matter whether the memory were Kingston Hyper-X Genesis or Samsung? I don't know in what significant way the actual manufacturer makes a difference. As far as I know, memory is guaranteed for life these days, isn't it?

The CPU would be a Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-3610QM (2.30GHz) 6MB.

From what I've heard, I think your memory speed is related to your bus speed. If your bus can handle 1600MHz but you only have 1333MHz chips, you'll be wasting potential speed on the bus side. On the other spectrum if you have a 1333MHz bus but have connected to it 1600MHz chips you'll only get 1333MHz thus wasting potential on the memory side.

Having memory that is rated fasted than the default bus speed of your motherboard is only useful if you want to overclock.

It's better to spend that money some other way - either more memory or upgrade to a SSD if you haven't already. It's very unlikely that your system's bottleneck is in your RAM speeds.

A follow up question:

I'm running an AMD athlon 2 x4 3.0 cpu w/msi mobo. (4gb ram ddr3)

64 bit 12.10.

Would I be better off going with 8gb ram or upgrading to an SSD?

4gb is more than enough to handle most operations on Ubuntu so I woul recommend you purchase an SSD drive to increase boot and application loading times, this makes your system feel a lot faster on all fronts...

Also, you could assign /tmp to memory using tmpfs and lowering drive access which will also speed things up...
