Minecraft on Ubuntu? Extremely new to Ubuntu.

I just started using Ubuntu today and I attempted to download Minecraft onto my laptop but when I attempted to open the .jar nothing happened. I found a download through Terminal. This solution worked at first but when I log in I receive this error:

    Minecraft: Minecraft 1.2.5
    OS: Linux (i386) version 2.6.38-15-generic
    Java: 1.6.0_22, Sun Microsystems Inc.
VM: OpenJDK Server VM (mixed mode), Sun Microsystems Inc.
    LWJGL: 2.4.2

Like I said before, I'm very new to Ubuntu. Thank you for you help and patience.

There are several threads devoted to this (here is one)...

What I would suggest however is simply following the steps given on the Minecraft channel (always worked for me... but I can't give you a specific link as I can't open the site at the moment).
