nvidia 8500gt at > 100 degrees Celsius constantly

I had to reinstall 12.04 because my hard drive died suddenly. After getting a new drive and installing 12.04, I enabled the nvidia driver. Since then the GPU runs full bore constantly (there is only one performance level). As a result, the card is always over 100 degrees Celsius.

Prior to the hard drive dying, it rarely got above 70 degrees Celsius.

I would use the nouveau driver, but the problem is all downloaded videos are all pink. Strange but true.

I have a 8500GT and nvidia driver, but no issues.
My GPU originally had a cooler fan on it, which I removed and replaced with a Heatsink.
I have loads of room down there and it's nice and clean and good case fans/air flow

Before the reinstall, everything worked just fine. Something, obviously, is not right now, but I can't figure out what.

Could be the nvidia driver has changed and this has caused your trouble

You could try removing the driver and manually install an older driver manually
